Contactless Monitoring of Elderly or Disabled People and Patients with Commodity Electronics
The Challenge:
In order to keep or even improve the quality of life of elderly, impaired people or outpatients a stable and familiar environment is preferable. Often these people require some attention. Unusual behaviors may indicate illnesses requiring treatments. A monitoring application could for instance do fall detection, report a collapse due to severe sugar imbalance, or record the change of activity after medication of antihistamines. Such assistance system would inform a contact person, supervisor, or health consultant in case of detecting such critical situation. We propose a solution that is implemented locally so that no critical data is leaked and acts autonomously. It does not require any interaction with the monitored person and it works contactless. This latter aspect is very important since other solutions require that the person has to wear a belt, to carry some kind of device sending “still alive” signals, or in the least favorable scenario the person is physically connected to a monitoring system. For specific targeted groups of people such as dementia patients, children, or people suffering from mental illnesses an assistance system that is not contactless just have limited acceptance and poor usability. Moreover the right usage of the equipment has to be continuously checked by care givers thus significantly increasing the cost of deployment and maintenance when compared to a contactless solution.
