Brief description

The module provides students with a comprehensive knowledge of how to carry out a research project. The aim is to bring scientific work closer to students through practical application. In this module, the entire project management of a research project is addressed, laying the foundation by providing students with scientific and methodological knowledge.

Teaching and learning outcomes

In the course of the semester, students develop all the main facets of a research project along the lines of concept development; in this context, the planning of each student’s Master thesis constitutes the specific application.

  1. Discussion of problems and enhancement of knowledge of scientific research methods, research logic, and epistemology
  2. Deepening of methodological knowledge in qualitative and quantitative social research
  3. Development of thematic frameworks and issues as well as a structured research design
  4. Training on how to use social science theories and methods in the research process
  5. Creation of a work plan and schedule for research projects
  6. Exploration of challenges in the implementation of research projects
  7. Presentation and discussion of students’ work results or projects

Knowledge Broadening

Students expand their knowledge of scientific methodology and the use of social science theories on the basis of current issues and problems or research projects and/or their own work. They also learn about specific challenges posed by research projects.

Knowledge deepening

Students learn a basic understanding of scientific reasoning and evidence, and practice their knowledge transfer skills for combining the basics of social science (theories, concepts) and empirical use cases. They also deepen their knowledge of research logics and empirical methods.

Knowledge Understanding

Students evaluate their previous research experience or knowledge of scientific work. Based on the content of this module, they reflect on the requirements for successful research projects.

Application and Transfer

Students are able to independently develop concepts for research projects, and have a clear conception of the scientific, specialist, and organisational challenges of such a project.

Academic Innovation

By developing topics and research questions, students explore new perspectives that demonstrate scientific and societal relevance.

Communication and Cooperation

Students improve their ability to reason scientifically.

Academic Self-Conception / Professionalism

The criteria and standards of good scientific practice are a key element of the module that is repeatedly used as a benchmark to reinforce the student’s scientific self-image.

Literature

The reading material depends on the focus of the research workshop in that semester, and its content. Students also receive individual reading suggestions, depending on the thematic focus of their research project.

Linkage to other modules

The module builds on students’ experience from previous modules where they developed their own projects. It adds to this content all the important facets that are relevant for research projects, preparing students to work on their respective Master thesis. At the same time, the module sustains the application orientation by enabling specific research projects to be developed in the form of a research workshop.
